What does it mean to you being selected as a Lloyds TSB Local Hero? How will the Award help?
It's an enormous help and enables me to continue playing and competing full-time, and will be crucial in this training period up until the 2012 Olympics.

How did you first get involved with your sport?
Through the UK Sport talent transfer program 'Sporting Giants'.

Tell us about any challenges you have overcome to follow your sporting dream.
Largely the funding cuts from UK Sport which removed the small personal funding we received and having to continue living in Denmark with no support just to be able to play at a suitable level.

Do you have any family members who have achieved success in sport? If so, please provide some details below.
My older brother was a very good Tennis player when he was younger.

What advice would you give to a young person considering taking up your sport? What would your top three tips be?
Find a local club and start playing as much as you can and get a ball in your hands as much as possible.

Your Local Hero Biography
My name is Mark Hawkins I am a 26 year old Handball player from West Sussex. I took up handball through UK sports Talent ID program and was offered the chance to transfer from Basketball to Handball with an aim of training for the 2012 Olympic squad. I now play in the N1 League in Iceland, I was the first British player to ever play and score in this league, my aim for this year is to be in the team for the London Olympics.

What is your PB and what date was it set?
In the last year I have competed in World and European Championships qualification process for the first time and in total have now played 29 internationals, scoring 60 goals.
