Frequently asked questions

Why is Lloyds TSB supporting the ticketing journey?

We're the presenting partner for the ticketing journey to London 2012. We are supporting the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) to ensure that as many people as possible have the information they require in order to apply for tickets to the Games.

1.0 - Ticket Prices

How much do tickets cost?

Tickets for the London 2012 Olympic Games are available at a wide range of prices starting at £20. There are also special prices available for young people and seniors across all Olympic sports. Young people who are aged 16 and under (at 27 July 2012) will pay their age for a ticket. Seniors aged 60 and over (at 27 July 2012) will pay £16. These 'pay your age' ticket prices and senior ticket prices will be available in more than 220 sessions. The price of a ticket for a wheelchair space includes a companion seat located next to it.

You can view all ticket prices for the London 2012 Olympic Games on the About tickets page. Paralympic Games ticket prices will be announced later in 2011.

What are special prices?

Special prices for young people aged 16 and under (on 27 July 2012) and seniors aged 60 and over (on 27 July 2012) are available in more than 220 sessions. Look out for the blue flag in the full competition schedule, indicating the price categories in which special prices are available.

How many tickets am I likely to be allocated depending on how many I apply for?

You should consider your budget very carefully when afpplying for tickets. Once your application is processed you cannot cancel, change or return the tickets you are allocated. When you apply, the maximum amount you could be charged will be made clear to you and you'll need to have sufficient funds available to cover this.

Customers will have the opportunity to resell their tickets at face value through the official London 2012 resale programme in 2012. This will be the only authorised way to buy tickets from people offering their tickets for resale. Further details will be announced in early 2012.

You will be able to add a price range indicating the lowest and/or highest prices you are willing to pay for tickets to a session - by entering this price range it will increase your chances of being allocated tickets.

How can I go about applying for tickets for groups of family and friends?

There are ticket limits per session which will vary between different sports and sessions and this will be made clear on the competition schedule. For venues with a higher capacity (such as for Football) the limit is likely to be higher. The person buying the ticket will have their name on the ticket and will therefore be responsible for them.

You will be notified if you are unsuccessful in any of the sessions you applied for - you will either receive the allocation you applied for, or you will be unsuccessful and receive none. So if a family of five applies for tickets for a Handball session (providing you're within the ticket limit for that session) and you are allocated tickets to that session you will receive either the total quantity of tickets you requested for that session or none at all.

There is no formal group ticket sales programme but people should take advantage of sessions with 'pay your age' prices and sessions with higher ticket limits.

How do refunds and resales work if I decide I don't want my tickets?

You should consider your budget very carefully when applying for tickets.

Will there be any restricted views?

Your application will be for tickets in a particular price category rather than for specific seats - seating plans will not be available. Most sessions have tickets available in more than one price category. Tickets in price category A will provide seating with a better view of the field of play than a ticket in price category E at the same session and venue. All price categories will still provide a great Games experience.

How long is the time span between applying for tickets and payment being taken?

You will be debited through your nominated method of payment between 10 May and 10 June 2011. You should ensure that you have sufficient funds to cover the maximum amount of tickets your may receive.

Why can you only pay with a Visa card, why not a Master/Maestro/AMEX card?

In recognition of Visa's support of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, London 2012 is proud to accept only Visa cards (debit, credit and prepaid) on the official ticketing website.

Sponsor support is crucial to the staging of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games and the operation of organisations throughout the Olympic Movement.

London 2012 welcomes postal orders and cheques as an alternative means of purchasing tickets for customers without a Visa card. You can pick up an Official Ticketing Guide including paper ticket application from you local Lloyds TSB branch.

Applications received after that date will not be considered.

What if I decide I no longer wish to apply for tickets?

If you decide you no longer want your application to be processed, you can withdraw your application (between 15 March and 11.59pm on 26 April 2011 only) by contacting the London 2012 Ticketing customer service team on 0844 847 2012. Caution! Once you withdraw your application it will be void, so please think carefully before you take this action.

How do I make changes to my paper application form?

Please consider carefully when applying for tickets for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

If you need to change your personal details or session choices after you have submitted your application form you will need to complete a new form and post it to London 2012 Ticketing, PO Box 798, Manchester, M60 1WU no later than 11.59pm on 26 April 2011. The Ticketing customer service team will process the application form with the latest 'received by' date and send you a new letter with your new ticket application reference number.

I have lost my Visa card or had it stolen – what do I do?

If you have received a new Visa card because the card you registered with us has been stolen or lost, please write to us at London 2012 Ticketing, PO Box 798, Manchester, M60 1WU, or call us on 0844 847 2012 no later than 11.59pm on 26 April 2011.

If you are not allocated all of the tickets you requested, you will be notified by Friday 24 June 2011 and a letter confirming the refund process will be posted to you by Sunday 31 July 2011.

I've made an error on the form, can I cross it out or do I need to get a new form?

We recommend that you plan your application carefully before you start to complete the form. A blank piece of paper and a calculator may be useful. If you make an error in section 2 of the application form, please cross out the while line and start again on the line below. If you make an error anywhere else on the form, you will need to get a new form and begin your application again. If your form is illegible, we may not be able to process your application.

What does "increase your chances" mean?

To increase your chances of obtaining tickets for all of the sessions you have indicated, we recommend you tick the box in section 4 of the application form to indicate that you will accept tickets in a lower price category if your preferred price category is not available. This will apply across your entire application. However, if you have only selected tickets in the lowest price categories, this will not apply to you.

I have been on holiday and only just realised the closing date is today but I need to submit my form. Will you accept it if it's after 26 April?

To ensure that the ticket application process for the London 2012 Olympic Games is fair and open we are unable to accept applications after 11.59pm on 26 April 2011. If you would still like to apply prior to the deadline, please do so using a Visa card at www.tickets.london2012.com.

If I send my application form to you by special delivery, do you know what the cost is?

Please seek guidance from your local mail delivery provider.

3.0 General

If I apply immediately when the application phase opens, will I have a better chance of getting tickets?

All applications received between 15 March 2011 and 11.59pm on 26 April 2011 will be considered equally so there is no need to submit your application as a matter of urgency. Take the time to discuss your Olympic experience with family and friends. Think about attending some sports that you wouldn't normally have the opportunity to experience and be sure to consider some of the exciting events taking place outside London. But remember, all applications must be submitted no later than 11.59pm on 26 April 2011.

I am a foreign customer residing in the UK while the application period is open – should I apply as a UK resident? What if I leave the UK before the Games?

For the purposes of ticket sales for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, UK residents and designated European countries are defined as:

Residents of these countries should check they have the necessary documents for entry to the UK.

If you reside in one of the countries listed above, you are eligible to apply for tickets at http://www.tickets.london2012.com/

If you are not a resident of the UK or a designated European country, regardless of citizenship, you will need to apply for tickets via your National Olympic Committee (NOC) or National Paralympic Committee (NPC).

Some NOCs or NPCs may appoint an Authorised Ticket Reseller (ATR) in order to help the general public obtain tickets and services relating to the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

For more information about your NOC, NPC or ATR please read the International Authorised Ticket Reseller list.pdf. on the Locog website  Please note: this list is subject to change.

If I have submitted an online application already, can I change the events I have selected or do I need to withdraw the application and start again?

If you would like to amend your online application please login to www.tickets.london2012.com and withdraw your application. Your ticket requests and any selected merchandise will remain in your account for you to amend and resubmit before 11.59pm on 26 April 2011.

Can I apply both online and using a paper form?

Only one application per person will be allowed regardless of the method by which you apply.

What happens if I can't attend the event?

Once your application is processed you cannot cancel, change or return the tickets you are allocated.

Customers will have the opportunity to resell their tickets at face value through the official London2012 resale programme in 2012. This will be the only authorised way to buy tickets from people offering their tickets for resale. Further details will be announced in early 2012

What name will I see on my credit card or bank statement when the payment is taken?

London 2012 will appear on your statement. Payment will be taken between 10 May 2011 and 10 June 2011.  You will only be charged for the tickets you have been allocated.

Please ensure that you have sufficient funds available to cover the total cost of your application. Please be aware that your application may be withdrawn if you do not have sufficient funds available.

I would like to get the best chance of a ticket and am selecting lots of sessions, but if I am allocated them all will I have to pay for them all?

We encourage you to take your time in selecting a range of sports, sessions and price categories to apply for. Tickets start at £20 across all sports. All price categories will provide a great Games experience. Please plan your budget carefully as you are committed to purchase any tickets you are allocated.

When will I get my tickets?

All tickets will be delivered in summer 2012. For security purposes, your tickets will be billed and delivered to the address you provided in your ticket application. If you need to update your address, please contact the London 2012 Ticketing team.

Please can you explain what 'special prices' are?

Tickets with special prices for young people and seniors are available in more than 220 sessions.
If you would like to apply for tickets with special 'pay your age' prices for young people (aged 16 and under at 27 July 2012), the price is £1 for every year of a young person's age at 27 July 2012. So a ticket for a child who is 12 years old on 27 July 2012 would cost £12.
Special prices for seniors are available for people who are aged 60 and over at 27 July 2012. These tickets cost £16.
These special prices are also available when purchasing a wheelchair space.

How do I make a group booking?

There will be ticket limits per session which will vary between different sports and sessions and this will be made clear on the competition schedule. For venues with a higher capacity (e.g. for Football) the limit is likely to be higher. The person buying the ticket will have their name on the ticket and therefore be responsible for them. If you can't make it and pass it on to someone else then we will be sensible about it but our default position is that the buyer should be attending the event.

So if a family of five applies for tickets for a Handball session (providing you're within the ticket limit for that session) and you are allocated tickets to that session you will receive the total quantity of tickets you requested for that session. You will be notified if you are unsuccessful in any of the sessions you applied for – you will either receive the allocation you applied for, or you will be unsuccessful and receive none.

There is no formal group ticket sales programme but people should take advantage of sessions with 'pay your age' prices and sessions with higher ticket limits

Why are Paralympic tickets not part of the application process?

Applications for Paralympic Games tickets will open on 9 September 2011 and will follow a similar sales process. Further details of the application process for Paralympic Games tickets will be announced later this year, with prices announced in May 2011.

Can you process my application for me over the telephone?

Ticket applications cannot be made over the phone during this application window.
In order to apply for tickets online you will need to sign up and create a ticketing account at www.tickets.london2012.com  This is the easiest and quickest way of applying for tickets.
If you do not have access to the internet you can apply using the paper ticket application form, which is contained in the official ticketing guide available from your local Lloyds TSB branch. If you live in Scotland you can pick up a guide in your local Bank of Scotland branch or from your local library if you live in Northern Ireland.

I have a Visa card but my friend/partner doesn't, can I apply for them with their name and address?

For security reasons, it is not possible for someone to apply for tickets on behalf of another person. If paying by Visa, the account holder name and address must be the same as the name and billing address of the Visa card holder.
Please read Payment and charges for further details.

How can I apply for tickets if I am a member of UK Armed Forces with a BFPO address?

London 2012 welcomes applications from UK Armed Forces. Personnel with a British Forces Post Office (BFPO) address should complete the required fields in the address section on the application form as below:

Address line 1: your Service Number, Rank, Name
Address line 2: your Unit Regiment
Address line 3: your Operation Name and your BFPO Number
Postcode:         your postcode
Country:           BFPO

I only have a PO Box address. How can I apply for tickets?

You will not be eligible to apply for tickets because a valid street address is required in order that tickets can be delivered securely to you in summer 2012. You will be required to sign for your tickets as proof of receipt, which a PO Box address does not allow you to do.

What if you haven't yet obtained planning consent for a venue?

If consent has not been obtained and arrangements need to be made which would impact on the tickets you applied for, we will contact you with further information. Your rights as a consumer will not be affected.

Are there any free events?

There will be a number of events that do not require tickets: Athletics – Marathon, Athletics – Race Walk, Cycling – Road (Road Race),
Cycling – Road (Time Trial) and the cycling element of Triathlon. Some viewing areas will be ticketed and these are indicated in the full competition schedule.

Will all of my tickets for a session be seated together?

Tickets purchased at the same time will be seated together. Any additional tickets, for the same session and in the same price category, purchased at a later date will be seated together but will not be seated with your original application.

What types of seating are available?

All tickets are for reserved seating in a venue unless general admission is stated. Reserved seating means that each individual ticket is assigned a specific seat in the venue and only the ticket holder may occupy the seat. General admission means that you can choose your seat on arrival at the venue, in the price category you have purchased, on a first-come, first-served basis, or it allows you entry into a venue in which standing is permitted.

4.0 Accessibility

If I indicate in my ticket application that I have an additional accessibility requirement or require a wheelchair space, will I be able to sit with my family?

London 2012 is committed to meeting the needs of as many disabled people as possible, including those who require a seat but have an additional accessibility requirement. Our aim is to enhance your spectator experience and that of members of your party. All members of your party will be located together so you do not need to advise how many people have an additional accessibility requirement. We will do everything we can to give you a great spectator experience, including enabling you to choose a location within the venue that best meets your needs.

What if my family are allocated tickets but I am unsuccessful in obtaining a wheelchair space?

This situation will not arise. If you have been allocated tickets for a session, you will be allocated the total quantity of tickets you requested for that session (including any wheelchair spaces) or none at all. For example, if you are apply for six tickets for a Football session you will either be allocated all six tickets or none.

What additional accessibility seating options are available?

We will do all we can to give people with an additional accessibility requirement a great spectator experience including enabling you to choose a location within the venue that best meets your needs. The options are:

  • Seats with a direct view of a video screen for people who are deaf or hearing impaired (HI)
  • Seats close to the action for visually impaired people (VI)
  • Seats for people who need to be on the end of a row (EA)
  • Seats for people who cannot manage many steps at the back or the front of a stand (EAS)

In section 2 of the application form, please indicate, for each session, your additional accessibility requirement. All members of a party will be seated together.

5.0 Application Process

What if I am unsuccessful, will any further tickets be released?

As part of this sales process, applicants will be given the opportunity to apply for any remaining tickets in June/July 2011.

Following this, any tickets which remain unsold will become available for sale online and by phone, using Visa only, from winter 2011. During this time, tickets will be sold on a first come, first served basis.

I've seen tickets on sale at other websites – can I purchase them?

Tickets are available on the official London 2012 ticketing website or through Authorised Ticket Resellers (ATRs) worldwide depending on the country you live in. Please read Ticket eligibility for further details.
Tickets can also be bought as part of hospitality and travel packages. Please read Hospitality and travel packages for further details. Official hospitality and travel packages are only available through the hospitality service providers listed below.

  • Thomas Cook

For more information about your NOC, NPC or ATR please read the International Authorised Ticket Reseller list.pdf. Please note: this list is subject to change.
Don't be fooled by bogus websites and organisations claiming to sell tickets to the Games. To check whether a website is an official sales channel use our website checker

How is the application process run?

We aim to give as many people as possible the chance to attend the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games so tickets will be available to everyone at the same time. The fairest way to do this is via a fair and open application process. Where demand exceeds the supply of available tickets, a random selection process ('ballot') will be applied using special ticketing system software. This ensures the ticketing process is fair and equitable to all applicants. This random selection process is now the standard for all major international sporting events including the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Beijing 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Athens 2004 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
