ATHENS 2004:
The marathon races followed the same route as the 1896 race, beginning in Marathon and ending in Athens' Panathenaic Stadium. Vanderlei de Lima (BRA) was in the lead with less than 7 kilometres to go when he was pushed off the course. De Lima held on to earn the bronze medal and was awarded the Pierre de Coubertin Medal in recognition of his Olympic spirit.

Meet your Lloyds TSB Local Heroes

Welcome to Lloyds TSB Local Heroes – our initiative to support more of Britain’s genuine young sporting hopefuls when they need it most.

Working in partnership with SportsAid, Lloyds TSB Local Heroes will provide funding to 250 emerging young sportspeople identified each year from local communities across Britain on their journey to London 2012 and beyond.  Many hundreds of athletes will benefit from Lloyds TSB’s funding to help with the costs of their travel, equipment and training.

But the encouragement, recognition and moral support we’ll be giving them is every bit as important and our customers and staff will have the privilege of keeping the dream alive for Lloyds TSB’s Local Heroes across the UK.
